How can I get support with study skills?
The number one source of academic support for students is their instructors. All students should take the opportunity to reach out to their instructors if they feel they need support in strengthening their learning skills, or want to improve how well they perform in class.
In addition to instructors, students also have access to the Learning Resource Center tools and resources, Writing Labs for writing help, the Workshop Wednesday recorded study skills events on CANVAS, and peer tutoring.
Students participating in ASU classes also have access to ASU's Library & Online Databases and Math tutoring via Zoom. Make sure to have your ASU login information handy when accessing materials.
How can I get peer tutoring?
California College of ASU offers free peer tutoring for students who request it. Students who need some extra help with coursework will be matched with a qualified student tutor. Requesting peer tutoring is an easy, free way to get help with course assignments, test prep, and projects. To request a tutor, students should contact the Learning Resource Coordinator, DeAnn Jordan, at [email protected].
What if I’m struggling in my classes?
Students who feel they need academic support for any of their classes should begin by communicating with their instructors. Students can also request support by filling out a New Support Ticket on The Student Helpdesk, selecting Struggling with School for area of support. Students who reach out may receive recommendations for some of the other resources that can help them to improve, such as peer tutoring, the writing lab, and the math lab.
What should I do if I’m in danger of failing a class?
Students who feel they are in danger of failing a class should begin by communicating with their instructors to explain their struggles and find out if it’s still possible for them to earn a passing grade.
After contacting their instructors, students can fill out a New Support Ticket on The Student Helpdesk to inform the academic team of their concerns.
When filling out the ticket, students should select Struggling with School as the area of support. From there, students will be contacted by an academic advisor to review the instructor recommendations.
How do I request to drop a class? What are the steps for dropping a class?
A class drop refers to an individual course withdrawal. It’s when students want to drop a class after the Drop without a "W" deadline has passed. As always, students who feel they are in danger of failing a class should begin by communicating with their instructors to explain their struggles and find out if it’s still possible for them to earn a passing grade.
Students can fill out a New Support Ticket on The Student Helpdesk to inform the academic team they are considering dropping a class, and explain why (especially if they are not dropping a class due to a failing grade).
When filling out the ticket, students should select: Struggling with Classes as the area of support, and Struggling with Classes: Drop a class after the Drop without a W deadline as their goal. From there, students will be contacted by an academic advisor to continue the process.
First, students must provide reasoning for wanting to drop the course, in addition to the specific course they are looking to drop.
If a student is requesting to drop a class because of a failing grade, they will need to submit correspondence showing that they have communicated with their instructor, or that the instructor has provided a recommendation to drop because it is no longer possible to pass the class.
If a student is requesting to drop a class because of mental health concerns, they will need to meet with a Student Affairs representative.
If a student is requesting to drop a class because of personal or work conflicts, they will need to meet with an academic advisor.
Once a student has met with the appropriate California College of ASU faculty/staff member, they must confirm understanding that there are no tuition reassessments after the Drop without a W deadline. Withdrawal requests will result in paying for the course in full again next semester. Students will also receive information detailing how the proposed course drop will affect their Financial Aid, including grants and/or scholarships.
Lastly, students can review the academic impact of completing a course drop with an academic advisor. While dropping a class will not impact a student’s GPA, it may impact degree progress, and it will be factored into a student’s rate of completion (ICR), which can lead to Academic Probation. Once this final piece of information is covered, students will receive an official form to complete for processing.
The deadline to drop a class with a "W" will always be posted on the academic calendar, which you can find here. This means that students must both request and sign a course drop form prior to the 5:00 PM PST cut off.
How do I change my program or emphasis?
Changing programs or emphases is an important decision, and we want students to have support. Students interested in changing their program or emphasis should fill out a New Support Ticket on The Student Helpdesk to inform the Academic Team. Students will need to choose Academics, Program and Emphasis, and then select Change my program or emphasis from the dropdown menus.
Students who complete the steps above will be contacted by an academic advisor to walk them through their decision and if the student is eligible, provide the paperwork required to finalize the change. Students will also need to meet with their department chair prior to finalizing any changes.
How do I calculate my projected GPA?
Some students like to set specific goals for their GPA. Students may want to calculate their projected GPA for an internship that offers opportunities for students with a certain GPA, a scholarship that is GPA-dependent, or even just the student’s own personal sense of motivation and drive. In addition, students who are placed on Academic Probation or academic warning may also want an idea of the exact grades they need to make in order to move out of warning or probation status.
